Deathwatch beetle (approx 3mm long). The larvae of these beetles manage to munch their way through medieval oak timbers that are almost as hard as steel. The name deathwatch refers to the mating call, a tapping sound made by jaws hitting the wood walls of their tunnels. When heard while sitting through the night with a sick person, there was a superstition that the patient would soon die. |
